La Selecta rumbo al Mundial de Catar 2022
La Selecta se encuentra lista para buscar el pase a la que sería su tercera Copa del Mundo. Y es que tras una larga espera, debido a la pandemia del covid-19, las eliminatorias de la Concacaf para el Mundial de Catar 2022, finalmente se han reanudado.
Hasta ahora, la Selección Nacional de fútbol de El Salvador, ha participado en dos Mundiales. El primero fue en México de 1970 y el segundo en España de 1982.
Primeros encuentros clasificatorios
La Selecta, disputó ya sus primeros dos partidos clasificatorios, en los que enfrentó a los combinados caribeños de Granada y Monserrat.
Inició con buen pie, al imponerse 2-0 a Granada y empatar 1-1 con los monserratenses.
Con estos resultados, la Selecta se colocó con 4 puntos en la segunda posición del grupo A, que completan las Selecciones de Antigua y Barbuda, Granada, Montserrat e Islas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos.
El partido ante Granada se disputó el 25 de marzo en el Estadio Cuscatlán de El Salvador. El mismo se realizó bajo estrictos protocolos de bioseguridad y ante una escasa afluencia de espectadores.
El equipo dirigido por Carlos de los Cobos, dominó el partido de inicio a fin. Y con goles de Gerson Mayén (minuto 23’) y Tony Rugamas (minuto 1’, segundo tiempo), obtuvo la victoria.

En su segundo encuentro realizado el 28 de marzo, la Selecta enfrentó a Monserrat en el Estadio Ergilio Hato de Curazao.
El Salvador abrió el marcador al minuto 3 con gol de David Rugamas, pero Lyle Taylor, le dio el empate 1-1 a Monserrat, en los últimos minutos del encuentro.

¿Qué sigue para la Selecta?
En sus próximos partidos, la Selecta enfrentará a las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses. También deberán medirse con Antigua y Barbuda, quien lidera actualmente el grupo A.
De terminar como líderes del grupo, los salvadoreños tendrán que encarar una serie de ida y vuelta ante el ganador del Grupo F. Esto para definir a uno de los 8 equipos que disputarán la fase final de las eliminatorias mundialistas a Catar 2022.
En el Grupo F se ubican las selecciones de Trinidad y Tobago, Guyana, San Cristóbal, Bahamas y Puerto Rico.
